Social addictions as Medicine
Dear colleagues:
My regards and some thoughts from South America. I agree in general with Dr.
Rose's comment but I think that he maintains an individual point of view. Our
life is "conditioned" by economical, cultural and social structures. You can
read it from Marx to F. Guattari.
I live in the country with an increase of poverty and social violence.
Nevertheless, my colleagues believe that in the capitalism lies one of the most
important responsibilities for our whole situation. They are loving all the
"garbage" which comes from the first world: Europe and Us. We are colonized
people.
Has anybody read M. Foucault about the meditation of the societies? Our medicine
wants to build perfect bodies, stress resistant with passive minds.
I am enjoying reading your opinions. It is time to talk without masks and
bandages.

Not a medical complicity?

McDonald's and Burger King are examples of successful enterprises which
mix an efficiency of organization with much profits by sending junk food,
rubbish with good taste, well done and some Disney-MGM-Sony-Spielberg products
in the happy box. Hollywood helps us to eat garbage with cheerful.
And almost all our kids and youth like to be there, eating and drinking
"colas". With a little of pesos, you can eat something fashionable in the
comfortable place.
But I think that we, doctors are a little accomplice. We studied a Medicine
without human beings, only as a biological organism. Not as "social body", with
desires, affections, relationships, history and society. In general, we belong
to the bourgeoisie and we are thinking and loving Money, Fame and some social
Power. We try to reach a "good seat"(more above, than better!) in our Medical
Society. We believe in pharmaceutical drugs and technology, but not in the
curative power of our listening to our patients' compliances, our words and our
hands.
And, of course, most of us are conservative.
Colleagues, worse information is the triumph of Mr.Bush, our capitalistic cowboy
and military guard!

When some money comes from the international charity to "help" our Health, which
destroyed by our politics with the complicity of the private Medicine, it is
invested in publicitary things to show us that they are doing "good things".
Some hospitals are built or surrounded by poor people without
work, food, running water, good sewer and education. Is this an example of
Health for all or only publicitary alms?
The financial capitalism - organization responsible in part of our punishment
with the political complicity of our national bourgeoisie - could sleep without
guilty and we continue with our misery.
But better, don't say anything: we are doctors!

To my opinion we are inside a tramp.
Tobacco manufacturs(factories) are in the Third World:my country,for
example,and lots of workers depend on them.
Tobacco companies suporting our politics:From Menem,Duhalde to Lopez
Murphy.They recive money for their campaign.
And they 'll pay back their money with politics thinks.
My city smoke:in all places,people are smoking:sidewalk,squares,hospitals
and universities:my coleages smoking.Nobody do nothing to evoid it!
Only good speeches at the Medicals Meetings
The international organizations doing politic:in same way,they are charitys
associations.Their government destroy countries and they give medicine to
repair the hurt.One hand to kill,the other to kiss!
¿The victims are guilty?:
Without cigars,nobody will smoke,
without drugs,noboby will consume.
But in our societies we need to survival some
escapes:colas,beers,drugs,dreams,TV,tobacco,sex...and,of
corse,aspirines,beta bloquers,statins,contraceptives,ansiolitics,and
antidepressives.
Our world are a market:they said is the globalization.
And we are consumers of lots of garbages to live.
The American stile of life hero is Homer Simpson!
To the end,the Tobacco companies are brothers to other
industries:pharmaceuticals,entertainment and petroleum companies.

Western style of life:when the bodies are money.
Our advanced-first world or colonized-third world capitalism make a lot of
Homer Simpson and Donald duck,only two of more examples.
People are invaded by the "Big Brother" on TV or our computers who teaches
us how to live and to be in our society.
The "entertainment machine" or the "culture industry" manipulate and
dominate our mind and bodies.They need"passive bodies"to costume and to buy
everything that they invent.
Our society made fat,smoke and sedentary people with the control of the
individual consciousness and,also,the inconsciouness.
To belong to the western style of life(Time is money)you wish to
have:coke,beer,burger,TV,computer,tobacco,Hollywood,Disney,Fame and Power.
We live togather in a huge loneliness.The other are stranger and
dangerous,never friendly.We need thinks to be because we are empty.
The capitalism need war to exist and passive bodies:stupid,fat,dependent and
obedient.
This is our reality,our gold standard.

Smoking in the cardiology room
In my hospital people smoke: from administrative, unions, nurse to the
physicians.
In the cardiology department the new generation of doctors (most of our
residents) smoke a lot.
Most of our team, staff and head: smoke.
And, of course, the beginners, also do it.
Nobody said nothing.
They think that never could be sick because of they have magical thought.
And the indifference and complicity of their chief and team.
Our colleages have the same behavior as our patients.
In an hypocritical society we, in general, can't avoid to be different: we are
egotistical, selfish an under all the " social addictions" like as Tobacco.
People believe in power, glory, money and fame and our colleage,...of
course!
They have a capitalistic ethic and are "power addicted", why not?
